Rising State Power House Beats Longtime State Power

Coach Bob Sphire called it a "community win" against power house Brookwood High School. But it really was a gut check. The 5,000 plus fans that attended the game would agree. Special teams were the difference between these two evenly matched opponents. Marquese Quiles, North Gwinnett's senior corner blocked three Brookwood's kicks. The AJC called Marquese proformance "invincible" Friday night. Both teams are know for the defense play, and it looked like it might become a low scoring defensive battle. Both teams score points on there opening drive. North started scoring with a Kyle Micek field goal and Brookwood answered back with an opening 75 yard touchdown run by Junior running back Kenny Miles.

Seven ranked North Gwinnett improved to 2-0, while Brookwood fell to 0-2 for the second straight year.

North Gwinnett's special teams coordinator Troy Hobbs may be getting a raise if his special teams continues to give is opponents the same type of nightmare performance that he planned and excuted against  Brookwood. "Hobbs is the man," Head Coach Bob Sphire said of his special teams/wide recievers coach. Troy's been with me for 11 years, and he's been my special teams coordinator almost all that time. He does a heck of a job."

The second half, Kenny Miles of Brookwood, ran for another 65 yard touchdown and it looked like Brookwood was right to score again, when a field goal was blocked by Marquese.

The Bulldogs scored with 7:00 left, taking advantage of there field postion. North's quarterback Tamburo and 21 and 14 yard runs to set up his 1 yard TD. North's quarterback completed 15 of 25 passes for 118 yards. North held the lead from there stopping Brookwood deep in its own territory on there final two drives.

There is no question that North's student atheletes did a great job handing the highs and lows of the game. The coaching staff did a great job keeping North in the game. The game could of easliy gone the other way.
